About Monash Medical Centre (Clayton) Intensive Care Unit & The Victorian Heart Hospital (VHH) Intensive Care Unit

The Victorian Heart Hospital (VHH) Intensive Care Unit is a 16-bed ICU specialising in cardiology and cardiothoracic surgical intensive care. VHH performs nearly 800 open-heart surgeries annually, making it one of the highest-volume cardiac surgical centres in Australia. The unit offers advanced mechanical circulatory support, including 20–30 Veno-Arterial ECMO cases per year and a newly developed Impella program. It provides care for patients with complex heart failure, rhythm disturbances, and manages over 20% of Victoria’s ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) cases.

Together, MMC and VHH ICUs offer a highly stimulating and supportive clinical work environment, underpinned by an active, intensivist-led education program. Educational opportunities include:

  • Weekly Registrar and Senior Registrar teaching

  • Dedicated CICM Part I and Part II examination preparation (for CICM trainees)

  • A formal, network-wide multidisciplinary simulation program

  • An established and CICM-accredited ICU Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) program, led by Monash Health intensivists and sonographer educators

  • Recognised courses, including Advanced Life Support (ALS Level 2), Basic Assessment and Support in Intensive Care (BASIC), and internal training in ECMO and cardiac advanced life support

  • A formal mentoring program

About the Role

An exciting opportunity exists for suitably qualified applicants to join the Monash Medical Centre (Clayton) Intensive Care Unit and the Victorian Heart Hospital (VHH) Intensive Care Unit as an Intensive Care Registrar or Senior Registrar in 2027. Both full-time and part-time applications are welcome. Successful candidates will work at both sites during their employment period.

As part of their role, successful applicants will also contribute to the care of acutely unwell patients throughout the hospital, including participation in the institution’s Medical Emergency Team (MET) responses. Applicants are expected to demonstrate a high level of professionalism and work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
