Description:

We are recruiting a full-time early/mid/advanced-career academic Neuro-Interventionalist to join the Section of Neuro-Intervention / Division of Neuroradiology at the Toronto Joint Department of Medical Imaging (JDMI) and the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto. The position is open to Neuro-Interventionalists with a background either in Neuroradiology, Neurosurgery or Neurology with experience and fellowship training in Vascular Neurointervention. The anticipated start date is Sept. 1, 2026, or as mutually agreed. 

There is a rich institutional tradition to respectfully engage in medically challenging but always fruitful multidisciplinary decision-making discussions involving both in- and outpatients and elective / emergent care, with a strong commitment to maintaining a privileged partnership between Interventional neuroradiology, vascular neurosurgery & neurology (including hybrid specialists who have been trained here), anesthesia, critical care, ENT and ophthalmology that the new recruit will embrace. The Division of Neuroradiology values clinical excellence and considers integrity, humility, emotional/social and organizational awareness and empathy to be the core character strengths of the team player it is looking for. We seek a candidate to integrate a passionate group of like-minded colleagues who believe patients are best cared for by professionals working in a cooperative and psychologically safe environment toward the shared goal of outstanding care whilst enjoying a heightened sense of camaraderie and constant learning.

The incumbent must be eligible for an academic appointment at the University of Toronto at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Full Professor. Academic rank will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience. Candidates must hold an MD degree or equivalent, be certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, American Board of Radiology, or international equivalent, and be licensed or eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. Fellowship training in a comprehensive Neuro-Interventional practice and at least initial experience, ideally extensive experience as staff in a high-volume center, is expected.

Additionally, for candidates with a Neuroradiology background, a high level of diagnostic reporting skills is required given the expected participation in imaging interpretation during daytime and after hours, reading with DNR residents and fellows as well as leading subspecialty rounds.

The ideal candidate ideally has an aspiring or established academic profile and innovation-driven mindset, with a robust research background suitable for a Clinician-Scientist or Clinician-Investigator. There is extensive collaboration with our Krembil Brain Institute partners. An MD-PhD, MPH/eMBA title or another advanced degree or some other specific outstanding leadership expertise would be considered an asset. Preference will be given to a candidate who successfully obtained competitive academic peer-reviewed (local, national or international) grants as PI and/or has received significant industry support, and may be active in translational research and/or prospective database registries and clinical trials. An intrinsic drive and track record for national and international educational events, teaching and mentoring and the drive to deliver world class clinical care would be a major advantage. The successful candidate will be supported in furthering their career development goals and leadership ambitions. There could be an opportunity for a cross-appointment in Neurosurgery or Neurology.

JDMI is the medical imaging department of the University Health Network (Toronto Western Hospital, Toronto General Hospital, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre), Sinai Health, and Women’s College Hospital. There are 20 academic neuroradiologists and 8 neuroradiology fellows who work within one of three dedicated Head and Neck, Brain and Spine imaging sections (including MR-guided focused ultrasound ablations with the neurosurgical team), and INR sections, supporting one of the largest clinical and research centres for neurological diseases in North America. There are three emergency departments, a comprehensive stroke centre, and well-established subspecialty programs in neurovascular, neuro-oncology, functional neurosurgery, epilepsy, movement disorders, neurodegenerative disease, skull base/pituitary, and spine. The Neuroradiology Division is part of the Krembil Brain Institute for research and the Techna hub for device/software development. We are located next door to the Vector Institute for AI research and the main campus of the University of Toronto with possibilities to develop crosscutting collaborations with robotics and in vivo facilities such as the MaRS building at TGH.

JDMI has state-of-the-art facilities with 19 CT,14 MR scanners (including research scanners, 3T PRISMA, PET-MR), 2 dedicated neurobiplane units at TWH, with a third neurobiplane unit planned to be installed in 2026. Another hybrid OR neuro biplane in the new, current under construction tower at the Toronto Western Hospital will complete the equipment fleet by 2028. In this new tower, there will be also an intra-operative MR being installed. There is an outstanding collaborative spirit between Neurosurgery, Neurology and Neuroradiology within the vascular program. TWH is supported by outstanding anesthesia 24/7 for elective and emergent procedures. We are not a trauma reference center. Our facilities include an evolving endovascular training and research skills lab with dedicated 3D printed and human placenta models and will soon incorporate recording and broadcasting capacity for hands on and remote teaching and education purposes.

Compensation will be in accordance with the uniform average salary of a Radiologist in the Province of Ontario, with a range that exceeds $300,000 CAD per annum. Extended health benefits to be discussed with the University Medical Imaging Toronto (UMIT) practice plan through the Radiologist-in-Chief.
