The Opportunity | Te āheinga

We are seeking two Project Digitisation Assistants to support the preservation and digital access of the significant Feaver Collection at Puke Ariki. These are fixed-term roles for one year from 1st July 2026, working 38 hours per week, focused on the digitisation of historic glass plate negatives to recognised heritage preservation standards.

 

In this project-based role, you will digitise glass plate negatives and process the digital files, ensuring high-quality digital outputs that meet best-practice standards for long-term preservation and access. You will apply robust collection management processes, including the creation of new digital images and the maintenance of existing records, with careful attention to accuracy and consistency.

 

The role also requires confident object handling and knowledge of digital imaging software. You will be responsible for attaching the digital images produced through the project to the appropriate object records within the Museum’s Vernon collection management system, supporting both internal collection management and future public access.

 

This opportunity is ideal for candidates looking to build practical experience in heritage digitisation, collections care, and museum database systems while contributing to the safeguarding of an important photographic collection for future generations.

 

 

Key Responsibilities | Ngā haepapa matua

  • Generate digital images from glass plate negatives in the Feaver photographic collection, and process these to heritage preservation standards
  • Manage related digital files, under the guidance of the Museum’s Collection Digitisation Technician
  • Attach the images to their related database records, in liaison with the Project Cataloguing Assistant
  • Support the Pictorial Curator and Exhibitions team with preparatory work for the project exhibition
  • In liaison with the Collections Digitisation Technician and Curator, prepare posts, blogs or small articles for the Museum’s project webpages
  • Contribute ideas for digital outputs, within the scope of this project

 

 

Essential Skills and Experience | Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako

  • Advanced knowledge of digital image processes, from capture to output, to specified heritage preservation standards.
  • Demonstrated expertise with Adobe Creative Cloud.
  • Proficient in the use of DSLR cameras.
  • Tertiary qualification in studio photography or related field is desirable.
  • Exceptional eye for detail, particularly relating to file quality and metadata management.
  • Best practice handling and storage of heritage collection items.
  • An awareness of museum databases or understanding of other databases.
