Purpose

The Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator is responsible for the safe, reliable, and regulatory‑compliant operation of all site water and wastewater treatment facilities. The role ensures the continuous treatment and distribution of potable water and the effective collection, treatment, and discharge of wastewater in accordance with applicable permits, legislation, and EOCP requirements.

Working as part of the Site Maintenance Team, the operator supports operational continuity across multiple water and wastewater systems in a remote mining environment, protects human health and the environment, and contributes to the overall performance, reliability, and sustainability of site infrastructure.

Accountabilities

Reporting to the Site Maintenance Supervisor, the Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator is responsible for the safe, compliant, and reliable operation of all site water and wastewater treatment facilities. Key accountabilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Operational Accountability

• Operate and monitor all assigned Water Treatment Plants (WTPs) and Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) in accordance with:

  • Applicable permits
  • British Columbia Drinking Water Protection Act and Regulation
  • Municipal Wastewater Regulation (MWR)
  • EOCP requirements and best practices.

• Control the flow, treatment, and processing of raw water, potable water, wastewater, and treated effluent to meet regulatory and operational standards.

• Start, stop, and adjust pumps, blowers, generators, chemical feed systems, valves, and other process equipment manually.

• Interpret operational data, alarms, and laboratory test results to maintain stable treatment processes and respond to abnormal or upset conditions.

Regulatory & Compliance Accountability

• Act in accordance with EOCP Responsible Charge requirements commensurate with certification level and facility classification.
• Collect, preserve, and analyze samples; perform routine field and laboratory testing to verify treatment performance.
• Complete and maintain accurate operational logs, reports, and records as legal documentation for regulatory compliance, inspections, and audits.
• Ensure water quality and effluent quality meet all permit and regulatory requirements and immediately report non‑compliant conditions in accordance with procedures.

Maintenance & Asset Care

• Perform routine inspection, preventive maintenance, and minor repairs on treatment equipment and supporting infrastructure.
• Coordinate with maintenance and trades for corrective repairs beyond operator scope.
• Maintain and manage critical spare parts inventory to support reliable operation of remote facilities.
• Utilize SAP systems to document maintenance activities, create work orders, track asset history, and support compliance and reliability objectives.

Safety & Environmental Stewardship

• Perform all duties in accordance with Newmont’s safety standards and environmental management systems.
• Safely handle and manage treatment chemicals (e.g., chlorine, potassium permanganate) in accordance with WHMIS, SOPs, and regulatory requirements.
• Maintain high housekeeping standards within treatment facilities to support safety, reliability, and compliance.

Decision‑Making & Coverage

• Make operational decisions in the absence of direct supervision to maintain safe and compliant treatment operations.
• Provide operational coverage across multiple facilities, including response to alarms, after‑hours call‑outs, and emergency conditions as required.
• Support continuous improvement of treatment processes, operating procedures, and system reliability.

Key Relationships

Collaborate across departments to ensure timely and cost-effective completion of maintenance and special projects with on-site teams and trades.

Required Qualifications

• Current EOCP certification, at a minimum:

  • Water Treatment Operator – Level I
  • Wastewater Treatment Operator – Level III
  • Wastewater Collection - Level I
  • Water Distribution - Level I

• Ability and willingness to obtain higher‑level EOCP certifications as required by facility classification.

• Minimum 3-5 years of hands‑on experience operating municipal or industrial:

  • Water Treatment Plants, and/or
  • Wastewater Treatment Plants.

• Demonstrated experience with:

  • Sampling, testing, and regulatory record keeping
  • Chemical handling and disinfection systems (e.g., chlorine)
  • Basic mechanical maintenance of pumps, valves, and controls.

• Valid Class 5 Driver’s License.

• Working knowledge of:

  • BC Drinking Water Protection Act & Regulation
  • Municipal Wastewater Regulation (MWR)
  • EOCP Responsible Charge requirements.

• Strong commitment to safety, environmental compliance, and housekeeping standards.

Desired / Asset Qualifications

• EOCP Water Treatment – Level II or higher.

• EOCP Wastewater Treatment – Level IV certification.

• Experience operating multiple treatment facilities simultaneously, including:

  • Small Water Systems
  • Modular or package plants
  • Seasonal or remote facilities.

• Experience acting in Direct Responsible Charge (DRC) or as lead operator during absences.

• Familiarity with:

  • SAP platform
  • Permit reporting and regulatory inspections.

• Mechanical or trade background (Millwright, Plumbing, Electrical, Instrumentation).

• Water Quality Engineering diploma or similar.

• Experience working in remote or mining operations.

Safety & Environmental Stewardship

• Demonstrates a strong commitment to health, safety, and environmental protection through strict adherence to procedures, permits, and regulatory requirements.
• Proactively identifies hazards, risks, and non‑compliant conditions and takes appropriate corrective action.

Technical & Operational Competence

• Demonstrates sound technical knowledge of water and wastewater treatment processes, equipment, and controls.
• Effectively interprets operational data, alarms, and laboratory results to maintain stable and compliant treatment operations.

Decision‑Making & Accountability

• Exercises independent judgment to make timely, defensible operational decisions, including when acting in the absence of direct supervision.
• Understands and fulfills responsibilities associated with EOCP Responsible Charge, within certification limits.

Planning & Execution

• Plans and executes routine inspections, maintenance, and operational tasks to ensure reliable system performance across multiple facilities.
• Utilizes CMMS/SAP systems to manage work orders, preventive maintenance, and asset records.

Communication & Documentation

• Communicates clearly and effectively with supervisors, maintenance personnel, regulators, and other stakeholders.
• Maintains accurate, complete, and timely records and reports to support compliance, audits, and regulatory inspections.

Collaboration & Relationship Building

• Works effectively with site maintenance, environmental, and operations teams to achieve shared goals and resolve issues.
• Builds positive working relationships in a remote and multidisciplinary work environment.

Continuous Improvement & Learning

• Demonstrates a willingness to expand technical knowledge, pursue higher EOCP certification levels as required, and contribute to system and process improvements.

 The expected hourly rate for this role is CA$53.70/hr . This range is tied to the British Columbia market for jobs performed in British Columbia.
