Purpose

The Welder II will work as part of a team that is responsible for performing specialized welding and fabrication duties related to building structures, fences, pipes, and various production & essential equipment repairs and maintenance, preventative maintenance and breakdown repairs of plumbing on site, also maintaining bore supply and potable water, as well as sewerage repairs. The Mechanic II is also responsible for specific hob-shop welding and fabrication assignments related to the custom operational requests and requirements.

Essential Duties

• Performs welding duties using ARC welding, MIG welding, TIG welding and oxygen/acetylene welding.
• Weld ferrous and non-ferrous components with welding equipment as specified by layouts, engineering drawings, work orders, or verbal instructions.
• Wears protection equipment when using welding equipment.
• Operates forklifts, slings, grinders, cutting torch, plasma cutter, oxygen/acetylene torches, air carbon-arc cutting equipment, sheet metal cutting/bending equipment, pipe bender and other hand or power tools related to the equipment repairs or fabrication.
• All work completed must be documented and recorded on the proper assigned work order.
• Uses a cutting torch to remove damaged metal sections and parts.
• Operates machine shop equipment such as a lathe, drill press, band saw, chop saw, and grinder.
• Routine preventative maintenance duties are undertaken on a daily basis, including visual inspection and faultfinding’s for kitchen appliances, pipe work (including sewage piping under ablutions), and nearby sewage plant, water treatment plant and bottling plant
• Any faults found in the visual inspection process are recorded on a maintenance form (Work Order), to be processed and addressed on the same day or the following day depending on urgency.
• Preventive maintenance tasks as generated by SAP.
• Daily sample of water quality and flow of water wells.

Training & Experience

Knowledge:

• Secondary School Diploma (MULO/LBO/LTO)
• Technical Diploma (NATIN/AMTO) or trade certificate from a recognized institute or training organization.
• Minimum, a mechanical trade’s certification from a recognized training institute.
• Must have knowledge of work hazards and safety requirements of the welding and metal fabrication trade, including the proper use and care of tools and equipment.
• Knowledge of plumbing repairs, maintenance and installation techniques.
• Proficient knowledge in water distribution and sewerage systems is preferred.

Experience: 

• Minimum 3 years industry experience, preferable in mining, processing, chemical plant, refinery, hospital or other critical equipment environment.
• Experience as maintenance and repair technician in public sector is preferred.

Skills and Abilities: 

• Must be able to read written work instructions in English and Dutch.
• Ability to formulate a structured, logical approach to maintenance activity and problem solving.
• Strong analytical skills are necessary.
• A strong commitment to work safety.
• Use necessary shop equipment to complete tasks such as appropriate welding equipment (selected to address work requirements), drill press, band saw, chop saw, machine lathe, and a variety of grinders.
• Read and interpret blueprints, schematics and rough sketches.
• Using Soldering Techniques
• Utilizing Tools to Assemble Components
• Ability to log water meter readings and water well readings included basic waterflow test
• Performing Pressure Tests on Pipe Systems
• Fusing of various sizes of HDPE Pipes
• Ability to lead and mentor team members.
