Purpose
The Drill Operator I is responsible to safely and efficiently operating a production drill in all aspects of drilling activities which includes but not limited to performing a daily safety inspection, reporting maintenance faults in a timely manner, operating the assigned drill equipment, reading drill pattern instructions, drilling blast holes to the correctly specified depth, ensuring he/she maintains the integrity of the drilled holes to allow an effective drilling sample to be taken, has a basic level understanding of MineStar, effectively and efficiently managing the drill under his/her control.
The Drill Operator I directly executes drilling functions follows procedures, is in training and works together with Drill Samplers or Drill and Blast Technicians. he/she has no direct reports
The Drill Operator I is responsible specifically for the Drilling works across multiple areas of the mining operations he/she works closely with other Technicians and Business Partners on a daily basis.
Essential Duties
- Follow the instructions of the Drill and Blast Supervisor
- Start and end timely ensuring all delays are minimised
- Work without risk or harm to self and others
- Practice sound work practices under direction, ask questions when an instruction is not clear.
- Communicate and provide work status handovers to incoming Drill Operators and the Drill and Blast Supervisor
- Communicate with the Dispatcher regarding hazards encountered to provide sufficient information to the incoming crew for the smooth running of the drill
- Consistently exercise discretion and judgement in job performance.
- Define and implement basic level drilling strategies for all tasks, allocated assets and support equipment, considering operational requirements and available resources
- Follow safe and efficient procedures for all routine tasks in compliance with legislation and Newmont Standards
Training & Experience
Knowledge:
- Secondary School/ Technical Diploma/Trades Degree/ Specialized Technical Training Certificate
- Have some knowledge of mechanical systems and demonstrated ability to perform and document a thorough pre-operational inspection to evaluate mechanical condition of the drill.
- Proficient safety knowledge of Drilling STP’s, SOP’s.
Experience:
- Two (2) years’ experience working in a Mining Environment.
- Experience in machine monitoring (making sure machine is working properly)
- Experience in coordinating tasks.
- Proficient in operating other mining equipment including stemming loader, tele handler, 785 truck
Skills and Abilities:
- Demonstrate good work ethic.

- Clear understanding of connection with personal work assignment and accomplishment of group goals.
- Ability to work collaboratively with others and see work through completion.
- Ability to learn and comprehend new concepts and new work processes.
- Solid skills with equipment / technical work as required to complete job.
- Proficient computer skills and knowledge of equipment required to complete work.
- Proficient level communication skills.
- Ability to complete complex forms/documents and order required parts/equipment to complete and document work.
- Set a standard for new drillers through being punctual and having a positive attitude.
- Sranang Tongo, Dutch and/or English language skills are required.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license appropriate to the requirements of the vehicle being driven.

Work Schedule: 14x7x12 Day & Night shift
