Join our team as a Level 4 Family/Carer Peer Worker on a Part Time basis to work in our emergency department located in the Emergency Department at Monash Medical Centre in Clayton

  

About the Role 

Join our team as a Level 4 Family/Carer Peer Worker on a part-time basis, working within our Emergency Mental Health, AOD, Allied Health and Peer (EMAAP) Team, located in the Emergency Department at Monash Medical Centre in Clayton. 

The Family/Carer Peer Worker will provide support to carers of consumers in the Emergency Department. As an integral and highly valued member of the EMAAP multidisciplinary team, the Family/Carer Peer Worker draws on their own lived experience of supporting a person’s mental ill health and recovery and use it with intent and purpose to support others. The Family/Carer Peer Worker – Level 4 will also continue to support family members and carers following the discharge of the consumer from the ED for up to 28 days, as part of the assertive outreach team. During outreach, family members and carers will be followed up both by phone and by face to face contacts in community clinics, other community settings and their own homes. 

You will be required to work across a 7-day roster (including morning and afternoon shifts 0730-1600 or 1330-2200). Flexibility and negotiation of shifts are available and open for discussion.

The Emergency Department Mental Health and Alcohol and Other Drug Response (EMAAP) team is designed to provide timely and effective assessment, treatment and post-discharge assertive support for individuals presenting to Emergency Departments (EDs) with high acuity mental health or AOD needs. 

  

About You 

As a designated Family/Carer lived experience role, you will have a declared personal experience of supporting someone living with mental illness, and experience of the mental health system. 

You possess a deep understanding of mental health challenges through your own lived experience as a Family/Carer and are passionate about supporting others. You have a genuine commitment to enhancing the lives of individuals with mental health difficulties and their carers. With a strong focus on inclusion, diversity, and person-centred care, you bring excellent communication and interpersonal skills to your work. Your enthusiasm, compassion, and ability to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team set you apart. You are driven to pursue a meaningful and purposeful career, with a desire to grow as a lived experience health professional. As an experienced peer worker, you are dedicated to fostering reflective practice in collaboration with others. 

 

What You Need

As a senior-level peer work role you will demonstrate the following key skills, experience and knowledge (see attached Position Description for a complete list of requirements): 

  • Declared personal experience of supporting someone living with mental illness, including experience of supporting someone as a mental health service user.

  • Ability to use your own lived experience to inspire hope in belief and recovery.

  • Knowledge of peer work principles and the ability to support others from a mutual perspective.

  • Completion of Intentional Peer Support (IPS) training.

  • Completion of, or working towards, Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work or similar qualification.

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience working as a peer worker or equivalent role is desirable.
