Join New Zealand Police at a pivotal time as we continue to evolve and strengthen our Media and Communications function.

 

This leadership role offers the opportunity to help shape the strategic direction of communications across one of New Zealand’s largest and most visible public sector organisations.

 

Leading a high-performing team of communications professionals, you will influence organisational reputation, drive audience-focused engagement, and ensure communications effectively support Police priorities, operational delivery, and public trust and confidence.

 

Working closely with executive leaders and key stakeholders, you will champion innovation, modern communications practice, and a cohesive enterprise-wide approach that connects communities, supports our people, and reinforces the vital role Police play in keeping New Zealand safe.

 

Based within our Media and Communications Centre of Excellence, you will help define the future of strategic communications for New Zealand Police.

 

Key Accountabilities:

 

  • Lead strategic communications to enhance organisational reputation, trust, and confidence.
  • Drive audience-focused content and channel strategies that support Police priorities and operational delivery
  • Partner with executive leaders and stakeholders to deliver a cohesive enterprise-wide communications approach.
  • Champion innovation and modern communications practices to strengthen engagement and community
  • Provide clear leadership and direction while managing risk, performance, and priorities under[CC1]  pressure
  • Provide strategic leadership and oversight of the media function, ensuring communications activities support organisational priorities, protect reputation, manage risk, and build a high-performing, resilient media team through effective leadership and governance.

Whakaritenga motuhake | Special requirements

 

The successful candidate will bring with them:

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Media studies; postgraduate qualification preferred.
  • Extensive experience in communications, media, marketing or related disciplines
  • Strong experience in and knowledge of media
  • Significant senior leadership experience, including leading leaders, senior advisors, and/or multi-disciplinary teams at an enterprise level.
  • Demonstratable experience leading organisation-wide brand, media, or channel strategy
  • Significant experience handling high-risk, complex and reputationally sensitive issues in high-profile environments
  • Demonstratable strategic influence at executive level

 

 

This role is based at our National Headquarters in Wellington. Some travel may be required

To be eligible for this role, you may be asked to obtain and maintain a SECRET national security clearance. 

The minimum criteria for this level of national security clearance is:

NZ Citizen who has resided continuously in NZ for the last 10 years, or: 

  • A Permanent Resident who has resided continuously in NZ for the last 10 years, or
  • A citizen of or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last 10 years: Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, or United States of America, and has a background that can be verified by the NZSIS.

Utu ā-tau | Salary 

This position is covered by a collective agreement and salary will commence between $171,055 and $191,061 dependent on skills and experience relevant to the role.
