Applications are invited from motivated and forward-thinking nurse academics for appointment at a Lecturer level, with a specific focus on postgraduate teaching and development in Ophthalmic Nursing. The applicant should have a strong interest in advancing specialist ophthalmic nursing education and contributing to the growth and sustainability of this field within the Division.

 

This appointment is ideally suited to a candidate with a qualification in Ophthalmic nursing, or willing to obtain the PGDip in Ophthalmic Nursing qualification within at least one year. The successful applicant will also be expected to commence a PhD as soon as possible, if they do not already have this qualification.

 

The successful applicant will be responsible for contributing to teaching on postgraduate programmes, supervising postgraduate research, and engaging in scholarly activity aligned with the Division’s strategic priorities. The candidate will also contribute to management and administration at Divisional and Departmental levels. The post offers a unique opportunity for academic and professional development as an ophthalmic nurse specialist within a vibrant, research-active Nursing Education Institution committed to excellence, transformation, and social responsiveness. The appointment will be effective as soon as conveniently possible.

 

This Lecturer position will be appointed under the auspices of the New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP) funded by the Department of Higher Education & Training. This full-time permanent position is open to South Africans, and priority will be accorded to those aged 40 years or younger. The appointment will be made in terms of the purposes expressed in the Staffing South African Universities Framework (SSAUF). Requirements:

  • Masters in Nursing with a 70% average pass mark
  • PGDip in Ophthalmic Nursing or willing to obtain the qualification within at least one year of appointment
  • Registered with SA Nursing Council as a Nurse Educator, General Nurse and Midwife
  • Evidence of an Assessor and Moderators Certificate registered with SANC
  • Experience in the use of digital platforms for teaching
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrable ability to work independently and in teams

 

  • Advantages:
  • PhD in Nursing  or related field
  • A minimum of three years of teaching experience at a postgraduate level at a Higher Education Institution

 

Responsibilities will be tailored to meet the nGAP support structure and will include ratios of:

  • Facilitation of quality teaching and learning in the Division’s postgraduate programmes
  • Provision of academic support
  • Participating in the curriculum development and review activities within the Division
  • Co-supervision of postgraduate research
  • Developing a personal research focus area in Ophthalmic Nursing
  • Contributing to administration and management at Divisional and Departmental level
