Phu Bia Mining Limited is a Lao-registered company, 90 per cent owned by PanAust, an Australian-headquartered copper and gold mining company, with the Government of Laos owning the remaining 10 per cent. Phu Bia Mining owns and operates two award winning operations – Phu Kham Copper-Gold and Ban Houayxai Gold-Silver, both located in Xaisomboun Province, 120km north of Vientiane.

Our modern mine camps provide great Lao, Asian and Western food, sport and recreational facilities and housekeeping services. Site-based employees work a roster of 20 days on, 8 days off; 9 days on, 5 days off; or 14 days on, 7 days off for shift work, while Vientiane – based employees work 5 days per week with 2 days off.
Reporting to the Senior Mine Geologist, the Mine Geologist is responsible for the integration of all geological functions at Ban Houayxai into the safe and efficient extraction of the ore body. Key aspects of the role are all focused on accurately defining the distribution of mineralisation within the current extent of the ore body and looking for extensions to these. To maximise ore recovery and minimise ore loss and dilution to ensure ore deliverables are aligned to the short term forecasts and long term objectives.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Grade control drill hole design
- IRD (advanced grade control) drill hole design
- Blast hole sampling designs in waste areas to define PAF/NAF classification
- Review results regularly from GC campaigns and look for opportunities to extend the resource below LOM design and to also reduce metres in defined waste zones
- Provide drill priority and guidance to the Grade Control Supervisors for daily and weekly plans
- Create drill hole sign-off sheets for deep resource definition holes
- Monitor downhole surveys for deep resource definition drilling
- Monitor drill rates vs monthly budgets
- Understands mine planning and mining production requirements to ensure continuity of production as per the mining plan; however, never breaks geology and geological processes under production pressure
- Daily drill rig and pattern inspections to monitor safety and QAQC performance
- Coordination of future ore program – select areas containing high risk in GC and IRD designs and manage regular dispatching of samples to metallurgists
- Update drilling tracking spreadsheets for resource and advanced GC campaigns
- RC chip and diamond core logging
- Daily Lab QAQC compliance and manage investigation for any discrepancies
- High wall mapping and floor mapping every bench and incorporate data into lithology, structural and weathering models
- Design and monitor SG testing and hardness campaigns, and ensure all data is entered into the Acquire database
- Complete blast mapping for Drill and Blast Engineers and validation of Geology models
- Actively lead in the development of the Grade Control Team
- Positively contributes to the Mining team attaining its business plan targets and ensures that all targets for the resource development section are met
- Generates reports as required to the necessary standard
- Completes other tasks assigned by the Senior Geologists
To be successful in this role, you will require:
- High diploma or bachelor’s degree in Geology or related field
- 1–3 years of experience in mine geology preferred; however, fresh graduates are encouraged to apply
- Proficiency in Lao and good communication skills in English
- Competent in Microsoft Office applications; experience with Surpac or other geological software is an advantage
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively in a team environment
- Excellent organisational and time management abilities
