The project aims to provide key knowledge and reduce uncertainty on the 3D architecture of natural fault and fracture systems, from the km to (sub)meter-scale, within some of the target units for geothermal exploration, namely Jurassic and Cretaceous carbonate formations beneath the Swiss Molasse Basin.

 

The main responsibilities of the candidate will be to (1) produce a regional synthesis of fault and fracture systems in Vaud and a state-of-the-art review of the current regional knowledge, and (2) build a conceptual model of fault and fracture typology and density/intensity in the target reservoirs of the GEOOL project. The candidate will use all available vintage and newly acquired data, including digital outcrop models as well as 2D and 3D seismic and borehole geophysical data, to meet the objectives mentioned above. The candidate is also expected to conduct fieldwork on outcrop analogues to complement existing data.

 

The successful candidate will work independently, under the guidance of internal collaborators at ISTE and in collaboration with GEOOL and DGE-GEODES. The candidate will also be embedded within the Deformation and Tectonics group at ISTE.

 

We are seeking a proactive individual with a collaborative spirit, who is experienced in using multidisciplinary data to study fractures and other brittle structures. Knowledge of the regional geology, particularly the Jura Mountains and Swiss Molasse Basin, and/or geothermal projects is an asset. Applications from candidates of all backgrounds are welcome, in particular from those underrepresented in academia. Flexible working arrangements (including 80%) are possible. Proficiency in English is required; knowledge of French and/or German is an advantage.

Expected start date in position : 01.07.2026 or upon agreement

Contract length : 1 year, with a possibility of renewable for 1 year

Activity rate : 100 % or upon agreement (minimum 80 %)

Workplace : Institute of Earth Sciences, Faculty of Geosciences and Environment, University of Lausanne

Your responsibilities

85% of the activity will be dedicated to research.
15% of the activity (maximum) will be dedicated to teaching assistance in relation to Bachelor’s and Master’s courses in structural geology, digital geology, and/or field mapping.

Your qualifications

  • A PhD in relevant science and engineering fields (including but not limited to geology and geophysics)
  • A strong background and willingness to conduct research in structural and field geology, with particular focus on brittle tectonics
  • Knowledge of the regional geology (Jura Mountains and Swiss Molasse Basin) and/or geothermal projects is an asset
  • Ability to meet project deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct high-quality research and a strong interest in disseminating results, including through peer-reviewed publications or other relevant outputs
  • Strong written and spoken English; knowledge of French and/or German is an advantage but not required
