Phu Bia Mining Limited is a Lao-registered company, 90 per cent owned by PanAust Limited, an Australian-headquartered copper and gold mining company, with the Government of Laos owning the remaining 10 per cent. Phu Bia Mining owns and operates two award winning operations – Phu Kham Copper-Gold and Ban Houayxai Gold-Silver, both located in Xaisomboun Province, 120km north of Vientiane.

Site-based employees work a roster of (9/5 days) for residential or fly in – fly out (28/14 days) for FIFO roster with travel in company time and transport to and from site provided by the company, while Vientiane – based employees work 5 days per week with 2 days off.
Reporting to the Geotechnical Engineering Superintendent, this senior site-based role is responsible for ensuring operational pit and dump designs are aligned with approved Life of Mine designs, with a key focus on slope stability analysis, geotechnical risk identification and mitigation.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Act as the technical lead for open pit slope and waste rock dump designs and provide geotechnical support to site mine planning and operational teams.
- Provide Geotechnical and Hydrogeological inputs to support LoM studies
- Undertake slope stability analyses, ground support designs, and produce high-quality Geotechnical reports to support long-term, medium-term, and short-term mine planning.
- Demonstrating a strong understanding of geotechnical analysis inputs, associated confidence levels, and the limitations of applied methodologies.
- Develop and recommend practical, realistic geotechnical solutions to mitigate risks to mining and production teams.
- Effectively communicate geotechnical designs for pits, waste dumps, and associated infrastructure to Stakeholders and External Consultants.
- Validate and interpret geotechnical databases (including mapping and rock mass characterization) through ongoing data collection, evaluation, and integration into geotechnical models.
- Ensure all geotechnical monitoring, mapping, testing, and logging data are systematically analyzed, with risks clearly identified and reported.
- Mentoring and Training of Geotechnical Design Engineers
- Development of Lao Nationals as part of PBMs career development plans
To be successful in this role, you will require:
- Degree qualification in Geotechnical Engineering, Mining, Geology or related field
- Extensive working experience in Geotechnical design, open pit with base metal
- Proficient in using RocScience Suite (Slide2, Slide3D, RS2, RS3, RocSlope 2D/3D, Dips, RocFall 2D and 3D), Leapfrog Geo, Surpac/Deswik, AcQuire/IMAGO
- Strong commitment to training and supporting the growth of Lao National employees
- Demonstrated safety focus
