The Division of Emergency Medicine seeks to appoint a Senior Lecturer to convene the Postgraduate Diploma in Emergency Care in a permanent part-time position (3 days per week).
The successful candidate will provide academic leadership of the PGDip programme, including programme management, curriculum oversight, teaching, postgraduate supervision, and strategic development. The candidate will also contribute to teaching across the Division’s undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and support the Division’s research and academic mission.
The Postgraduate Diploma in Emergency Care is a well-established and strategically important programme that contributes significantly to postgraduate emergency care education in South Africa, including through a successful Recognition of Prior Learning pathway.
Requirements for the job:
- Master’s degree in Emergency Care, Emergency Medicine, Health Professions Education, or related discipline
- Undergraduate clinical qualification registerable with HPCSA or SANC
- Registration as an independent practitioner with relevant professional council
- Demonstrable specialist or advanced clinical experience in emergency care or emergency medicine
- At least 3 years’ demonstrable experience in a dedicated emergency care setting where emergency care is the primary function of the role
- At least 3 years’ demonstrable experience in health professions teaching
- Experience in postgraduate programme leadership, coordination, or curriculum management
- Demonstrable experience with online learning management systems
- Ability to work independently and be self-driven
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work collaboratively across academic and clinical platforms
The following will be advantageous:
- Specialist registration in Emergency Medicine
- A PhD, or progress toward doctoral qualification, in Emergency Care, Emergency Medicine, Health Professions Education, or a related discipline
- Experience convening or coordinating postgraduate academic programmes
- Experience working with the Amathuba learning management system
- A demonstrable record of peer-reviewed publications
- Experience supervising postgraduate research students
- Leadership or management experience in academic or clinical settings
Responsibilities:
- Convene and manage the Postgraduate Diploma in Emergency Care
- Provide strategic leadership, quality assurance, and curriculum development for the programme
- Convene and teach on postgraduate course offerings across the Division’s programmes
- Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate clinical teaching
- Supervise and mentor postgraduate students
- Contribute to the Division’s research agenda and scholarly outputs
- Strengthen academic progression pathways into Master’s level study
- Contribute to divisional leadership, planning, and administration
- Contribute to divisional activities related to community engagement and social responsiveness.
- Perform administrative functions at Divisional, Departmental, Faculty and University level, as required.

The annual cost of employment, including benefits, is between R502 527 an R724 414 (24hrs per week).
