Job Purpose

The Senior Mechanical Engineer acts as a senior technical authority responsible for delivering advanced mechanical and MEP engineering solutions across complex projects. The role requires extensive experience in the design, design review, construction supervision, inspection, testing, and commissioning of mechanical systems, ensuring full compliance with applicable national and international codes, standards, and authority requirements.
The Engineer will lead and oversee mechanical and HVAC systems throughout all project phases, ensuring optimal performance, safety, energy efficiency, constructability, and long-term operability of building and infrastructure assets.     

Key Activities, Responsibility & Accountability

•    Lead, review, and validate detailed mechanical and HVAC designs, drawings, calculations, and technical specifications.
•    Supervision and Provide technical oversight during construction to ensure adherence to approved designs, specifications, and project schedules.
•    Ensure and validate overall MEP design deliverables, including interdisciplinary coordination between mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, identifying clashes, interface issues, and design gaps.
•    Review HVAC load calculations, ventilation rates, equipment sizing, redundancy concepts, and control philosophies.
•    Coordinate with contractors, suppliers, and vendors on equipment selection, submittals, factory acceptance tests (FAT), and delivery schedules.     
•    Review, assess, and validate integrated MEP designs (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) from a mechanical lead perspective, ensuring system coordination, load compatibility, spatial integration, constructability, and compliance with applicable codes, standards, and project requirements
•    Review and verify mechanical system designs for chilled water systems, chillers, pumps, cooling towers, boilers, heat exchangers, and associated plant equipment.
•    Oversee the design and construction of firefighting and fire protection systems, including fire pumps, sprinkler systems, standpipes, hose reels, and associated hydraulic calculations, ensuring compliance with NFPA and Civil Defense requirements
•    Prepare, review, and approve mechanical calculations, design documents, technical reports, specifications, method statements, inspection and test plans (ITPs), and commissioning procedures..
•    Ensure all mechanical engineering activities comply with applicable national codes, international standards, project specifications, and authority requirements.
•    Implement and enforce comprehensive QA/QC procedures for mechanical works.
•    Conduct regular site inspections, audits, and technical reviews, including verification of ductwork installation, piping pressure tests, equipment installation, and commissioning records.
•    Ensure compliance with energy efficiency, controls, and metering requirements, including HVAC control strategies.
•    Review non-conformance reports (NCRs), propose corrective actions, and ensure timely resolution.
•    Coordinate with fire and life safety engineers to ensure regulatory compliance.
•    Verify equipment foundations, clearances, pipe routing, slopes, supports, insulation, and interfaces with civil, electrical, and architectural elements.
•    Oversee testing, commissioning, and balancing activities, including HVAC TAB, pressure testing, flushing, chemical cleaning, and system performance validation
•    Ensure effective implementation of quality control, quality assurance, and HSE requirements across all mechanical engineering activities.

 

•    Act as a senior technical reference for mechanical and MEP engineering matters.
•    Provide expert guidance and resolution of complex technical and constructability issues.
•    Oversee ventilation, air conditioning, and indoor air quality systems, including specialized areas (kitchens, generators, battery rooms, pools).
•    Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to resolve design clashes, interface issues, and authority comments.
•    Facilitate effective communication and coordination among project stakeholders.
•    Provide technical recommendations on cooling plant selection based on lifecycle cost, efficiency, redundancy, and project requirements.
•    Coordinate closely with project managers, architects, electrical and civil engineers to ensure integrated and coordinated MEP solutions.

•    Approve the duct and pipe designs for code compliance and Basis of Design alignment. 
•    Review ductwork and pipework sizing criteria and layouts. 
•    Ensure proper selection of air diffusers, grilles, and terminal devices. 
•    Verify coordination with architectural and structural elements.
•    Validate sizing, pressure drop, velocities, and acoustics for performance and comfort. 
•    Ensure layouts, coordination, access, supports, and expansion for constructability. 
•    Confirm materials, leakage/pressure classes, insulation, and corrosion protection. 
•    Identify risks and Value Engineering opportunities and manage contractor reviews and approvals.

•    Lead the coordination with electrical, ICT, fire & life safety, and cybersecurity disciplines to ensure seamless system integration on BMS.Review BMS design intent, architecture, and system integration to ensure alignment with project operational and performance requirements. 
•    Ensure BMS designs comply with applicable standards, codes, and project specifications, including cybersecurity and access control requirements where applicable.
•    Ensure proper control of HVAC systems, fan coil units, alarms, reporting, and system access. 
•    Ensure proper BIM integration of mechanical systems with BMS, fire protection, and other building systems.
•    Review control strategies and sequences of operation for mechanical systems to confirm accuracy, efficiency, and maintainability.
•    Review and validate mechanical BIM models to ensure compliance with approved design basis, standards, and project BIM execution plans (BEP). 
•    Verify HVAC, piping, and mechanical equipment modeling accuracy, including sizing, clearances, access, and maintainability requirements. 
•    Ensure mechanical BIM models are developed to the required Level of Development (LOD) at each project stage.

•    Enforce compliance with Basis of Design "BoD", codes, and authority requirements for smoke control and life safety. 
•    Validate system strategies (exhaust, pressurization, make up air) and design fire/tenability criteria. 
•    Review calculations and Computational Fluid Dynamics "CFD" for sizing, pressures, door forces, and performance. 
•    Approve equipment selection, layouts, dampers, duct fire ratings, and penetrations/firestopping. 
•    Validate cause effect, sequences, interlocks, and Building Management System "BMS", Fire Alarm System "FAS" ,elevator integrations. 
•    Ensure egress tenability, door operability, and redundancy/emergency power. 
•    Oversee commissioning and integrated testing, endorse authority inspection readiness. 
•    Issue review comments and approvals (IFC/NOC), closing all design risks.

Professional Certifications


Certifications related to HVAC, energy management, or fire protection engineering.
Certification shows deep knowledge of mechanical design principles, HVAC systems, piping, and rotating equipment (pumps, compressors).
Proof of proficiency in 2D/3D modeling software (AutoCAD, Revit, SolidWorks) and simulation tools (CAE/Ansys)
Strong understanding of mechanical systems (rotating equipment, HVAC, piping, pressure vessels), manufacturing processes, and industry codes (ASME, API, ISO, ASHRAE).
Construction/Building Services: Experience with BIM tools, REVIT, Navisworks, and MEP systems.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline.

Pref - Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline. 

Experience

Minimum
15+ years of progressive experience in mechanical and MEP engineering, with extensive exposure to design, design review, construction supervision, inspection, testing, and commissioning of complex building and infrastructure projects.
