The opportunity we have available
The Payroll Services team, within the Workplace Relations and Payroll section, is looking for several Senior Payroll Officers at the APS 5 level. Our team provides assistance to employees with their pay, conditions of service and salary queries which includes salary progression, salary packaging, payment of allowances, applying and processing all leave types, and work related expenses. The team is friendly, cohesive and process focussed, working to fortnightly deadlines.
What will you do?
Reporting to the Payroll Manager under limited direction, you will:
- Administer leave and payroll processing of employee benefits in SAP (SAP ECC6). Your role includes the provision of advice on conditions of service, assisting with determining team priorities, staffing and workflow, to meet deadlines and working within a small team to achieve agreed outcomes.
- Provide advice to employees, at all levels, on issues regarding the interpretation of relevant legislation and other APS employment frameworks, including the Public Service Act 1999 and the Department’s Enterprise Agreement.
- Provide quality assurance ensuring that payroll processing is correct.
- Work on ad-hoc projects and systems improvements as they arise.

The successful candidate for this position will be able to demonstrate their capability against the APS 5 Work level standards.
We are seeking people who have a strong attention to detail and are willing to explore diverse and innovative ways of thinking. People who work for us need to be team oriented, outcomes focussed, curious to suggest improvements and have an ability to think outside the box to get results. Specific requirements for the role are:
- Experience working in a team performing payroll related tasks.
- Demonstrated payroll experience and a good working knowledge of legislation and employment conditions relevant to the Australian Public Service or the ability to gain such knowledge quickly.
- Experience in, or the ability to quickly learn SAP (SAP ECC6).
- Experience in preparing correspondence and reports (including emails and letters) on routine matters.

Eligibility requirements
Employment with the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and the Arts is subject to conditions prescribed within the Public Service Act 1999 including:
- Citizenship: candidates must be an Australian citizen at the time of submitting your application.
- Health Assessment: The preferred candidate may be required to undergo a medical examination conducted by the department’s preferred medical provider.
- Security Clearance: The successful candidate must be able to obtain and/or maintain a security clearance at Baseline Level. You must be willing to disclose all relevant and required information. You must have lived in Australia, or have a checkable background, for at least the preceding five years for Baseline Vetting clearances. More information on the security clearance vetting process is available on the Australian Government Security Vetting Agency (AGSVA) website.
- Police check: The successful candidate must satisfactory complete an Australian Federal Police criminal history check.
- Integrity and Performance check: The successful candidate must satisfy the requirements in an Integrity and Performance check which is completed by your most recent employer.
