Location: This is a hybrid (virtual/onsite) position with required onsite days on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and may be assigned to Jackson, Grand Rapids, Saginaw, Kalamazoo, Lansing or Alma Service Center in Michigan.  The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those that qualify). 

General Summary of Job Responsibilities

The Sr Mgr Electric Services has statewide responsibility for employee safety and the overall safe operation of equipment to protect employees and the general public. This role also provides strategic leadership for Protection and Control devices at 1,200 substations (HVD, LVD, and strategic customer substations), as well as all smart electronic devices on HVD and LVD lines. Leads a workforce consisting of field supervision, engineering/technical analysts, and Operations, Maintenance & Construction (OM&C) employees.

 

Leads and develops strategic partnerships with HVD Engineering to successfully plan and execute projects that improve the reliability and performance of the electric distribution system. Provides leadership and direction within the Electric Reliability Rally Room to support SAIDI performance objectives and work plan adherence. Directs, coaches, and develops EFL Leadership by assessing competencies, identifying development opportunities, and providing ongoing training and support to enhance leadership effectiveness. Manages and supports project execution activities, including budgeting, forecasting, and expenditure tracking, while promoting a culture of continuous improvement through effective problem-solving, process enhancement, project controls, performance metrics, and reporting across multiple levels of the organization.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for leading Daily Operating Reviews, Weekly Operating Reviews, Monthly Operating Reviews, Rally Rooms, Problem-Solving Events, and Financial Programs.
  • Understand company and departmental metrics and financials.Set safety standards and expectations for the department.
  • Lead quarterly all-employee calls to communicate and share lessons learned.
  • Review existing safety practices to ensure compliance.
  • Contribute to, update, and review departmental and corporate policies and practices.
  • Interact and align with Joint Apprenticeship Committees, Union Corporate Safety Representatives, and Corporate Safety.
  • Develop and maintain relationships and alignment with the Union State Council, Labor Relations, and Joint Apprenticeship Committees on departmental initiatives.
  • Provide round-the-clock escalation support, including support for on-call field leadership for substations.
  • Serve in a storm role as an HVD Group Supervisor, managing HVD restoration activities.
  • Participate in and contribute to HVD work management process improvements.
  • Responsibilities may occur outside of normal business hours and are in addition to the normal scope of duties.
  • Develop leadership and OM&C staffing plans to meet departmental needs, contractual requirements, and long-term resource plans.
  • Provide coaching and development for Field Supervision.Manage O&M relay testing, including NERC compliance testing.
  • Manage execution of assigned scope across various capital programs.
  • Perform statewide safety visits to verify compliance with departmental standards.
  • Daily, weekly, and monthly management of the statewide work plan, including assisting statewide areas with prioritizing and adjusting scheduled work, addressing system and resource conflicts, and managing customer expectations and outages.
  • Perform lessons learned reviews and analyses of significant system issues and outages.
  • Other non-essential duties as assigned or as necessary.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Knowledge of electrical power systems (protection, controls, operations, maintenance, and construction).
  • Ability to manage a large, statewide organization.
  • Ability to set, communicate, and model expectations.Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to establish a vision and influence the direction of the organization.
  • Strong relationships with union safety representatives and the State Council.
  • Knowledge of the Working Agreement.
  • Knowledge of the Substation Procedures Manual, Safety Manual, and Work Methods Manual.
  • Ability to read electrical wiring diagrams and schematic drawings.

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology with seven (7) or more years of experience in the maintenance and/or operations of HVD/distribution substations; and commissioning, maintenance, troubleshooting, and/or design of protection, monitoring, and control systems. Supervisory experience.

    • [OR] Associate Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology with nine (9) or more years of experience in the maintenance and/or operations of HVD/distribution substations; and commissioning, maintenance, troubleshooting, and/or design of protection, monitoring, and control systems. Supervisory experience.
    • [OR] High School Diploma or GED with eleven (11) or more years of experience in the maintenance and/or operations of HVD/distribution substations; and commissioning, maintenance, troubleshooting, and/or design of protection, monitoring, and control systems. Supervisory experience.
