Location: This is a hybrid (virtual/onsite) position with required onsite days on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and may be assigned to any Consumers Energy Service Center located throughout Michigan's lower Peninsula.  The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those that qualify). 

General Summary of Job Responsibilities

The Senior Tariff Analyst plays a key role in overseeing the Company’s gas and electric tariffs. This position supports the development and modification of tariff language for regulatory proceedings with the Michigan Public Service Commission. The Senior Tariff Analyst is responsible for configuration within the Company’s billing system, including accounting requirements, configuration requirements, bill messaging, bill print, and overall billing accuracy.

The incumbent collaborates with business partners, Legal, and enterprise-wide leadership to ensure compliance with all rates, tariffs, and regulatory requirements. This role also supports the configuration of standard and complex billing requirements while ensuring accurate billing and consistent tariff application.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Research complex billing issues, including customer complaints and discrepancies

  • Monitor Public Utility Commissions for changes in regulatory policies and procedures

  • Participate in assigned project teams and collaborate to identify potential issues or conflicts with SAP configuration

  • Lead regulatory proceedings, including:

    • Reviewing tariff proposals for potential billing system impacts
    • Providing production invoices for audit requests
    • Supporting the Rate Administration team with Staff and Intervenor Testimony review, PFD summaries, and final order summaries
  • Review complex production and/or audit simulation invoices following transport to production impacting rate configuration

  • Perform complex account setup, including the creation of standard work instructions to ensure consistency

  • Perform other duties as assigned or as necessary

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Demonstrated broad knowledge of regulatory laws and organizational structure, with specific expertise in the energy and utility industry
  • Ability to influence and build strong relationships across the organization
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to engage all levels of the organization
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities, tasks, and assignments
  • Ability to analyze and interpret complex information, conduct research, and manage highly confidential and time-sensitive matters
  • Strong technical writing skills
  • Billing configuration knowledge, including billing schemas, rates, price keys, operands, rate types, and rate determinants

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Business Administration, Political Science, Finance, Legal Studies, or a related field, with four (4) or more years of experience in Rates, Billing, Customer Service, or Auditing, along with a strong utility operations background. Experience in report creation, learning new technology, change management, and data analysis.
