Lihir is one of the world's largest gold mining operations, located on Niolam Island in Papua New Guinea's New Ireland Province. Your impact

As a Technician, Environment Monitoring, you will play an important role in protecting and preserving the unique environment of Lihir while supporting safe, responsible, and sustainable mining operations. Working across diverse ecosystems from marine environments and waterways to forests and rehabilitation areas you will contribute to environmental monitoring programs that ensure regulatory compliance, provide valuable environmental data, and support Newmont's commitment to responsible stewardship.

As part of our team you will

• Conduct environmental monitoring activities including marine water, surface water, groundwater, air quality, biodiversity, and land rehabilitation monitoring.
• Install, calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot environmental monitoring equipment to ensure accurate and reliable data collection.
• Collect, record, and manage environmental data within monitoring databases and reporting systems.
• Support environmental and community engagement activities across the Lihir operation.
• Maintain field equipment inventories and ensure monitoring tools are ready for deployment.
• Collaborate with environmental advisors, community stakeholders, consultants, service providers, and regulators to support environmental objectives.
• Contribute to a culture of safety, continuous improvement, teamwork, and environmental responsibility.

Prerequisites for your success in this role

To thrive in this position, you will bring:

• Grade 12 Certificate or equivalent qualification.
• Strong connection to and understanding of the Lihir environment, culture, and community. Preference will be given to Lihirian candidates.
• Participation in a School-to-Mine Program will be highly regarded.
• A valid PNG Driver's Licence.
• Sound computer skills, including Microsoft Office applications.
• The ability to work independently in the field and operate technical monitoring instruments.
• Strong problem-solving and logical-thinking abilities with a practical, hands-on approach.
• Excellent self-discipline, reliability, and commitment to meeting work obligations and deadlines.
  A collaborative mindset with the ability to build positive relationships across diverse teams and communities.

Your work environment

No two days are the same in this role. You'll work in a variety of environments across Lihir, including coastal marine areas, waterways, rehabilitation sites, forests, and operational areas. This is a hands-on field-based position suited to someone who enjoys working outdoors, learning new skills, and contributing to meaningful environmental outcomes.
You'll join a supportive team that values safety, development, and continuous learning. 

Working Conditions

This role is offered on a 21:21 Fly in, Fly out (FIFO) roster to Lihir Island, Papua New Guinea.

Our FIFO employees stay in a secure and comfortable camp, in an en-suited and airconditioned room equipped with mini fridge, TV and Wi-Fi. A variety of healthy meal options are catered for at our mess; and the wet mess provides a relaxed social setting where employees can unwind with a game of pool or darts.
