Blood Management Nurse Consultant  

This role is primarily responsible for providing organisation‑wide transfusion nursing expertise as the Transfusion Nurse Consultant, with additional responsibility for supporting NSQHS Standard 7 governance and accreditation readiness through the Clinical Governance and Quality Unit.

About the Role  

This role is an expert blood management resource for clinical and ancillary employees at Monash Health. Leveraging on highly developed professional leadership skills this role will initiate, lead, develop and evaluate the effectiveness of improvement strategies related to blood and blood product procurement, management and administration in accordance with national standards and international guidelines.  

The Blood Management Nurse Consultant ensures that the planning, delivery and evaluation of the Monash Health blood management program results in improved inter-disciplinary health care delivery, consumer outcomes and achievement of performance requirements. The specific responsibilities of this role include:   

• Promoting, implementing and monitoring systems to ensure the safe, appropriate, efficient and effective use of blood and blood products

• Contributing to the development and implementation of organisation-wide blood management policies and procedures in accordance with national standards and international guidelines

• Developing and coordinating blood management education and training for the workforce

• Providing expert resource to employees and patients for blood management related information and advice

• Contributing to the development of blood management information for consumers

• Data collection, evaluation and monitoring pertaining to blood management practices as required

• Monitoring and managing transfusion-related errors and adverse events and actively developing and promoting risk reduction strategies and reporting to the Blood Management Committee

• Participating in blood management related research projects, working parties, committees and forums

• Collecting data for the Blood Matters Program (for example, participation in the Serious Transfusion Incident Reporting Program)

• Liaising between the Laboratory and clinical areas, identifying and addressing issues related to blood management practice between these settings

• Preparing internal reports on blood transfusion data as required

• Preparation of Board papers and possible attendance at Board Quality meetings

• Promoting the specialised role of the Blood Management Nurse Consultant both internally and externally

• Facilitation of Blood Management committees and associated subcommittees, including agendas, preparing data and ensuring business arising is addressed

• Communication of relevant quality and safety issues through appropriate means

• Supports other National Standards across the QCGU and maintain currency with updated and emerging standards.

Accreditation:  

• Collaborating with key stakeholders to ensure Monash Health meets accreditation requirements under the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards

• Participation in ongoing requirements for organisational readiness against the National Standards, including:

• Education of both Executive and ward staff

• Completion of gap analyses

• Implementation of actions identified from gap analyses

• Facilitation of compliance with the audit framework; including coordination of auditing, and   preparation, analysis and dissemination of results

• Preparation for survey including facilitation, monitoring and attendance at committees

• Implementation of recommendations from previous surveys

• Strive to be survey ready everyday

About You  

Your skills and experience to date include:  

• Current registration as a Registered Nurse/Midwife with the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Australia

• Post graduate qualification in transfusion practice, quality improvement

• Demonstrated haematology skills

• Minimum 3 years’ post-registration experience within the acute care setting

• High-level literacy reporting

• Excellent organisational skills with demonstrated capacity to balance competing demands to ensure quality outcomes within timelines

• Excellent communication and problem-solving skills

• Experience in quality improvement or project management

• Experience in implementing the National Safety and Quality Healthcare Standards

• Demonstrated ability to influence and motivate participation in monitoring and improvement.

• Demonstrated ability to manage a range of complex tasks within and across several areas at the one time.

• Excellent writing skills including the ability to prepare reports using clear, concise language; to organise information into a logical sequence and include content appropriate for the purpose and audience.

• Exceptional interpersonal and engagement skills with demonstrated ability to interact with all levels of the organisation.

• Positive attitude in facilitating change and adopting new concepts.
